Black Portoro Gold vein marble, also known as “Black & Gold marble”, is the protagonist of this Formaminima Limited Edition, dedicated to this evergreen luxurious decorative stone. Recalling the ancient heritage of the Roman Empire, its quarries belong to the beautiful “Gulf of Poets” of Portovenere in Liguria-Italy. This prestigious polychromatic marble was employed in the decoration of Versailles castle in France, and several other remarkable historical buildings across Europe, throughout the 19th century. The velvety intense black background enriches and exalts the chromatic contrasts of large yellow-gold veins which cross the slab. In this dècor piece, a hand-ground slab of crystal is layered to an extra-thin slab of solid Black Portoro marble, thanks to an innovative experimental craft technique of surface layering. Lastly, a black mirror gradient is applied by hand, creating a trompe-l'oeil effect of a fading marble surface. Together with a frameless and sleek appearance, a faint tilt provides a further twist in the subject perception, increasing the engagement and highlighting the thinness and lightness of this unexpected two-dimensional composition.
