View allA collector’s delight, Bhikshapatra alms vessels are used by the Jain monks. Monks receive offerings, carry and store food in these stacking containers. The bowls are made of Rohida wood, (Tecomella Undulata) a native tree of Rajasthan. Rare, dense-grained, and self-propagating, Rohida cannot be planted or farmed making it resistant to insects and inherently hygienic. ‘Kharadi’ craftsmen, Muslim artisans who trace their ancestral practice to Mughal times, are immensely accurate, consistent, and sensitive in their woodturning. For centuries they have been making, perhaps the thinnest turned bowls anywhere, with skills few in today’s world possess.
